‘Dream come true’: Orphans evacuated to Australia in perilous journey through Afghanistan

Rashida Yosufzai

2021

While 10 orphans were able to be evacuated out of Afghanistan, dozens of others were left behind. Ten Afghan orphans who were smuggled through Afghanistan on buses and cars through the mountainous terrain of the war-torn country arrived in Australia on Friday.

They were removed from orphanages run by Australian charity Mahboba’s Promise in remote regions of Afghanistan as the Taliban took over the country.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
