14 Years of Hell

Bonney Djuric

2008

14 Years of Hell (2008) is an anthology compiled by Australian Bonney Djuric.

The stories are all written by women who were at some point as teenage girls incarcerated in the now infamous Hay Girls Institution 1961-1974.

Hay (located in the small town of Hay in NSW, 720km west of Sydney) was supposed to be an “experiment to rehabilitate hard-core delinquents.”

As is written on back cover, however, the institution was “a place of extreme dehumanising brutality for girls aged between 14-18 years.”

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
