153. The Founding Fathers: Alexander Hamilton

Empire

2024

American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton (circa 1755 – 1804) was orphaned as a child.
In this episode (#153) of Empire, Anita Anand & William Dalrymple explore the origin story of the man who served as the first Secretary of the Treasury from 1789 to 1795, during the presidency of George Washington (1732-1799).
The discussion includes Alexander Hamilton being in informal foster care with a wealthy merchant after he was orphaned in Charleson, Nevis, his move to New York City to pursue his education, and his time at Kings College, now Columbia University

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
