Alf Taylor

Alf Taylor (1945-2023) was a survivor of the New Norcia Mission who featured in The Mission (2023) documentary.

A Noongar man, Alf Taylor wrote poetry and short stories during a writing career of more than 30 years.

In 2021 he published his autobiography, God, the Devil and Me, which told of his growing up in the now infamous New Norcia Mission.

When asked by academic Anne Brewster about the humour in his book, Alf responded:

“… without humour, like I said, I would have been dead. You get six cuts across the hand and tears are flowing down your eyes…And then you look around and you see some boy doing some silly thing…and you’re pointing at him and you’re laughing…laughter was my sunlight and roses while locked in New Norcia.”

God, the Devil and Me was shortlisted in 2022 New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards – Indigenous Writer’s Prize.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
