In 1997, British poet Benjamin Zephaniah spoke to Sue Lawley on Desert Island Discs about his childhood, which included being illiterate and spending time in a youth detention centre.

He also talks about his work as a performance poet, which involved working in prisons and schools.

The conversation was replayed for Classic Desert Island Discs on 28 April 2024.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
