Cabrini

2024

Cabrini (2024) is an American biopic which tells the story of Catholic missionary Francesca Cabrini (Cristiana Dell’Anna).

The film opens by telling is about the 4 million Italian migrants to America between 1880 and 1920. Many settled in an area of New York called Five Points and it was common for Italian children migrants to be abandoned or orphaned.

Francesca Cabrini (1850-1917) travels from Lombardy in Italy to Five Points; with 5 other nuns she arrives in 1889. At the request of the Pope, she is to take over running an orphanage there.

With the help of a NY Times reporter and an Irish-born medical doctor, and the reluctant assistance of the Archbishop of NY, Cabrini and her women later take over a Jesuit property on the Upper West Side of NY and care for many children.

Despite considerable opposition, she also sets up a hospital.
