Grace

2023

Grace (from 2021) is a British crime series based on novels by Peter James and adapted by Russell Lewis. The series is set in Brighton and Hove and revolves around the cases being investigated by Detective Superintendent Roy Grace (John Simm).

Roy Grace is haunted by the disappearance of his wife some years previously.

In the 1st episode of the series, a woman says she was in the care system as a child. This is never confirmed and given the woman’s tendency to lies and manipulation may have been a ploy for sympathy.

Series 2, Episode 2 is the complicated story of triplets. One of the three died, one was adopted into a wealthy family, and the third was abused by their guardian. The latter is *spoiler alert* the criminal.

Series 3, Episode 2 also has a brother and sister who have been in care. The brother has been in prison and is initially suspected of committing a violent crime. We’ve already added the British crime series Grace (from 2021) to the archive as the 1st 3 series included Care Experienced characters.

Series 4 (2024) also has a Care Experienced theme in the 1st 2 episodes.

In Episode 1, a main character who was in kinship care as a child has spent the past 60 years trying to find out what happened to his father.

In Episode 2, a child protection social worker is murdered because of his role in removing a foster child from an alleged paedophile.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
