In defence of second chances

Kenneth Muray

2021

Kenneth Murray is a writer and public affairs specialist who campaigns for those with experience of care. Murray talks about how a community tried to get a children's home shut down, about his own care experience, his work with young men in prison and how labelling contributes to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Murray says '...we should give people a second chance, but we should also give them a third and a fourth and a fifth and however many it takes for them to make fulfilling lives for themselves.'

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
