Is adoption ethical

God Forbid

2024

In this episode of the God Forbid podcast, host James Carleton asks “Is adoption ethical?”

He begins the program by saying:

“Raising a child who is not your own can be a gift beautiful beyond words. But removing a child from parents who love them can be unspeakably horrific.”

He goes on to:

“Australia has a dark history when it comes to removing kids from the Stolen Generations of Indigenous children to the Forgotten Australians, the thousands of impoverished kids brought here from Britain, told they were orphans even though they weren’t. Then there are the 150,000 Australian women at least, unmarried mothers coerced into giving up their babies for adoption. At every stage the churches have been involved…”

The following panel discussion reviews the history of children in Australian being removed from their parents and the change in attitudes toward adoption.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
