The Altar Boys

Suzanne Smith

The Altar Boys explores the live and deaths of 3 victims of child sexual abuse by Catholic priests in the now notorious Maitland-Newcastle diocese in New South Wales. One of the victims became a priest who reported child sexual abuse to the NSW police; he was then banished from the diocese, ending up homeless and in poor health.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
