The Cook of Castamar

2021

The Cook of Castamar is a Spanish historical drama series. It is set in 1720 in Madrid and centres on the happenings in the household of the Duke of Castamar (Roberto Enriquez).

There are 2 Care Experienced characters, at opposite ends of the social class spectrum.

One is the adopted/fostered brother of the Duke, Gabriel de Castamar (Jean Cruz). Gabriel is saved from slavery as a small boy and threatened with slavery by the villainous Enrique de Arcona (Hugo Silva) as an adult.

The other is a servant Beatriz (Agnes Llobet), who was orphaned as a child and sent out to work at a young age. She uses her talents for blackmail to save funds to escape to America.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
