The Curious Fate of Care Leavers in Crime Fiction

Sarah Hilary

2022

Sarah Hilary writes of her recent Book Club event with Care Experience & Culture and how crime writers using the plot device of care leavers is actually somebody else's reality: "a recent interview with the Care Experience in Culture Project highlighted for me how often writers fall into the trap of creating care leavers who are either irredeemably damaged or possessed of super-powers."

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
