The kids who broke out of detention

Background Briefing

Tasmania's Ashley Youth Detention Centre in Deloraine, near Launceston, has been at the centre of a Commission of Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse in that state.

Former detainees of the Detention Centre have alleged they were sexually abused by 55 former workers at the facility, with one of those accused of sexually abusing at least 11 children over a 30 year period.

In this ABC program, Kyle (not his real name), who was only 10, says he was first sexually abused by fellow inmates. Later, it was the workers who carried perpetrated the abuse.
Also speaking on the program is Mary (not her real name) who is one of the few girls held at the detention centre and who alleges she was sexually assaulted by both workers and detainees.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
